But I do have to wonder about people who would believe someone who says clearly that "We do not torture" when his second in command is lobbying for the right to torture.
I mean, who the fuck can accept anything someone that blatantly dishonest says. What sort of brain twisting do you have to be capable of to look straight at that big of a lie, and consider President Bush to be speaking the truth.
We torture, we outsource torture, and we're seeking legal protection for our torturers. In fact, when Bush's daddy was working for, and later running the CIA, we were engaged in torture and outsourcing torture.
Of course Bush thinks torture is OK. He learned that from his daddy.
The question is, why are Americans accepting this ration of shit? Who are the people who think torture is OK, and that without even a trial, the government has the right to pick anyone out of a crowd, call them a terrorist, and torture them.
Who are these people?
Everyday people. It was everyday people who aided and abetted every historical massacre, genocide, gulag, torture chamber, pogrom, and purge. The world is full of everyday people who can be easily convinced that one group or another is expendable, that they're safe if they go with the side with the guns, and that it's OK to pick a side that the guns get turned on.
It's only in a very few religions that there's not some group that is portrayed as exempt from brutality. I'm not talking about religious texts, I'm talking about actual religions, in day to day practice. So few of us are actually raised with the clear, unequivocal answer to the question "Is it wrong to treat people like animals, as long as they're (not us, don't follow our religious rules, were born into the opposing religion, have the wrong skin color, vote the wrong way, were born in the wrong country).
Not enough people learn that lesson. Not enough everyday people really understand it. Otherwise this sort of thing wouldn't happen anymore.
