On my way to Philly for a short trip to visit [livejournal.com profile] glib_dichotomy for some post dentist-trip care.

Hi everybody. Still no Singapore trip write up. I am bad about that. But I will mention that, having taken a cooking lesson on Peranakan cuisine with one of the Raffles chefs, I am entirely psyched about having a South East Asian feast party. I brought home some actual candlenuts with me, and some sago pearls. Also, [livejournal.com profile] rosefox had a real Indonesian mango, and loved it. Before this, she apparently didn't know what good mango tasted like. Also, [livejournal.com profile] demonsismondo and I got some gaming in.

Once I get some time together, I swear I will start that Dresden Files game. I actually got some writing done on it on the subway down to Penn Station to catch the bus. Bus is speedy. I may be in Philly early, which is interesting because [livejournal.com profile] glib_dichotomy won't be out of the dentist until after I get into town. Ah well.

I'm proud to be defended by such an awesome group of individuals. Pretty much every Marine I've ever met has been an exceptional individual - brave, honest, smart, competent, heroic, modest (no kidding), self sacrificing, and dedicated.

While every branch of the service has it's elites, every Marine I've ever met has had an aura of being a badass. Not menacing, you understand. Just people you don't want to mess with because you know they're tough, smart, and trained to kick ass. I've also seen Marines engaging in rescue activities - the explosion of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines comes to mind. I remember being proud of my country helping in a serious disaster, and a deep sense of respect for these enormously tough people going in and helping save lives. Marines wage peace as well as they wage war.

I remember reading about the heroism of the Marines during the first and second Gulf Wars, and the later occupation of Iraq. I don't agree with the occupation, but I know our Marines did their best to rebuild the country, create peace, defend innocents, and represent America with as much honor as they could in the situation at hand. It goes without saying that other branches of the service did the same as best as they could, but today, we honor the Marines.

Happy Birthday, US Marine Corps!
